Salary Range Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Initial placement can range from $65.13 up to $88.11 per hour.

General Statement

San Mateo County Community College District values the principles of diversity and equity. This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Canada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of three years.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the position and not intended to cover all of the duties performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment. All assignments and work schedules can include day and evening hours and are created by the Dean of Counseling.

1. Provides short-term personal counseling and advisement to San Mateo County Community College District students; offers individual and group counseling sessions; sets and maintains regularly scheduled hours of operation under the guidance of the Director of the Student Development

2. Assesses the psychological needs of students and develops an appropriate plan of intervention

3. Provides solution focused psychological services to students; assists students with problem resolution, stress reduction, and communication skills

4. Provides crisis intervention services to students and consults with faculty and staff as needed

5. Develops and maintains confidential patient records in accordance with applicable standards of practice and federal and state laws and regulations

6. Functions as a professional liaison between San Mateo County Community College District and other community health services; facilitates transition from short-term counseling at assigned college to longer-term psychological services; coordinates with community crisis intervention agencies and services, as needed

7. Collaborates with staff of the Student Health Center in the delivery of programs and services; collects and analyzes data for reporting purposes; participates in the Program Review process; assesses Student Learning Outcomes and implements program improvements

8. Educates students and staff on the maintenance of psychological health and the minimization of emotional stress; may advise faculty and staff on best practices for supporting students with psychological issues

9. Attends relevant meetings on campus and in the community; may represent the college at local and regional meetings related to mental health

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent

Note: A Bachelor’s degree in one of the subject areas listed degrees above and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline

• Current California licensure as a Psychologist, Marriage and Family Therapist or Licensed Clinical Social Worker

• At least 2 years clinical experience with individuals and groups, preferably in a college setting

• Ability to communicate effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups and abilities.

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities

• Demonstrated effectiveness in providing crisis intervention

Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications

Degree Equivalence

The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence

Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence

The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Experience with the development and maintenance of confidential patient records systems

2. Demonstrated experience coordinating in-reach and outreach activities and promoting mental health services

3. Experience in providing short-term personal counseling to students from diverse backgrounds

4. Experience with intervention programs that support student success

5. Experience developing innovative programs that strengthen the quality of personal counseling services to students

6. Knowledge of and experience making appropriate college and community referrals

7. Experience in counseling in a California community college

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with foster youth and veterans

• Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable
